On September 27, 1066, a dramatic event that would change the course of British history began. After weeks of waiting for favourable winds, William, Duke of Normandy, finally set sail with his army. He sailed for the southeastern coast of England. This marked the start of the Norman Conquest. It was one of the most significant military campaigns in medieval Europe. This campaign culminated in the Battle of Hastings and the eventual crowning of William as King of England. The events of 1066 had long-lasting effects on the English monarchy. They impacted the culture and society—transforming the nation in ways that still resonate today.
