The Night of the Long Knives: How Hitler Eliminated His Rivals

In the early hours of June 30, 1934, Adolf Hitler executed a brutal purge. This event would come to be known as the Night of the Long Knives. This pivotal event marked a crucial turning point in consolidating Nazi power in Germany. Hitler aimed to eliminate potential rivals within the ranks of the Sturmabteilung (SA). The SA was the Nazi Party’s paramilitary organisation. Hitler targeted the leadership of the SA, including its chief, Ernst Röhm. This action not only secured the loyalty of the German military but also strengthened his grip on power. It set the stage for the absolute rule that would follow.
