The Arms Race: Fuelling the Cold War (1945–1991)

The Cold War was characterised by its lack of direct military confrontation between the superpowers. It was defined by a fierce and dangerous competition known as the arms race. The USA and the Soviet Union vied to develop more powerful and advanced weapons. Nuclear arms were a notable focus. This created a world teetering on the brink of disaster. For over four decades, this race shaped global geopolitics, heightened tensions and influenced many key events of the Cold War.
