Introduction
The Vienna Summit of 1961, held on June 3-4, was a critical Cold War meeting between U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. The summit took place against a backdrop of escalating tensions. It brought the leaders of the two nuclear-armed superpowers face-to-face for the first time since Kennedy’s inauguration. This high-stakes encounter would test the resolve of the young American president. It would also further intensify the Cold War conflict that had been brewing since the end of World War II.
