From Allies to Enemies: The Origins of the Cold War (1945–1949)

The Cold War lasted from the late 1940s until the early 1990s. It was one of the most defining and tense periods in modern history. It was not a war of direct combat between the world’s two superpowers. The United States and the Soviet Union engaged in a battle of ideologies and military buildup. They also competed in geopolitical and later, literal, chess. This intense conflict brought the world to the brink of nuclear disaster. Understanding the origins of this global rivalry is key. Grasping the nature of post-WWII international relations begins with the breakdown of the Grand Alliance.
